Truck driver how narrates how mob ma!med his Kano-bound passengers in Edo

A truck driver who survived the k!lling of 16 traveller of Kano State indigenes by a vigilante group in Uromi, Edo State, has recounted the harrowing experience, refuting claims that the incident was tribal-related.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when the travellers, believed to be hunters, were journeying from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Kano for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The truck driver, whose name was not revealed in a viral video circulating online, stated that he was transporting Dangote Group’s goods to Obajana in Kogi State when he encountered the hunters at Elele, seeking a ride to the northern part of the country.

“I initially refused to give them a ride because it was against my company’s policy. But after driving for about two kilometres, I felt guilty for abandoning them. After all, they are my fellow Northerners from Kano State, so I went back and picked them up,” the driver said.

According to him, the journey was peaceful until they arrived at Uromi, where they were stopped by a vigilante group. The leader of the vigilante allegedly questioned the driver about his cargo and the identity of his passengers. Despite presenting the waybill for the goods, the vigilante commander reportedly expressed suspicion about the hunters, particularly due to their weapons and dogs aboard the truck.

“He said he (Vigilante Leader) didn’t trust them and demanded they come down. As soon as the crowd saw their guns and dogs, they attacked us,” the driver narrated. “The commander told the crowd that we were kidnappers and Boko Haram, and they started beating us mercilessly.”

The driver, alongside two others identified as Haruna, an older man, and a younger man, were reportedly handcuffed by the vigilante commander and taken to a nearby police station. The vigilante informed the police that they had captured suspected kidnappers, leading to their immediate detention.

“By the time he went back to the scene, the mob had already killed 16 people,” the driver revealed, his voice filled with anguish.

He, however, categorically dismissed suggestions that the incident was a tribal clash.

“This was not a tribal clash. The vigilante are solely responsible for this attack. They are the ones that caused our people to be murdered in cold blood,” he emphasised.

The tragic event has drawn widespread condemnation nationwide, with calls for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Yesterday, a South African policewoman, called Ntombizodwa Ntinga was found guilty of k!lling her police officer husband and a family friend has been sentenced to double life imprisonment.

She was sentenced in the Mtubatuba High Court on Friday for the m8rder of her husband, Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ntinga,49, and their family friend, Mpendulo Mdluli, 34, a SAPS Administrative clerk.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in a statement revealed that Ntinga's co-accused, 22-year-old Samkelo Mpanza, was also jailed.

According to the statement, Ntombizodwa and Ntinga had a strained relationship, and she was involved in an extra-marital relationship with a person named ‘Khoza.'

“The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) High Court sitting in Mtubatuba sentenced Ntombizodwa Gertrude Ntinga (Ntombizodwa) to life imprisonment and Samkelo Ncamisa Mpanza to 25 years imprisonment effectively for kidnapping, robbery, and m8rder, of South African Police Service (SAPS) Warrant Officer, Nkosinathi Protus Ntinga (Ntinga) and SAPS Administration Clerk, Mpendulo Mdluli,” the statement read.

"The incidents took place in the Phathane area of KwaMbonambi in August 2023. Ntombizodwa was a SAPS Sergeant, and she was married to Ntinga.

"They lived together and were stationed at the KwaMbonambi SAPS. Mdluli was a friend of Ntinga, stationed at Ntambanana SAPS. Ntombizodwa and Ntinga had a strained relationship, and she was involved in an extra-marital relationship with a person named ‘Khoza.’

"She told ‘Khoza’ that Ntinga was physically abusing her, and they decided to have him k!lled. They then procured the assistance of Mpanza and decided to use two firearms to carry out their plan.

"On 01 August 2023, the assailants hired a motor vehicle and went to Ntinga’s house, where Ntombizodwa and Mdluli also were. They accosted them at gunpoint, tied them with cable ties and took their cell phones. They also took the service pistols belonging to Ntinga and Ntombizodwa.

"They abducted Ntinga and Mdluli, loading them into Mdluli’s motor vehicle. They took the men to a nearby sugarcane field where Ntinga was fatally shot and Mdluli severely assaulted.

" Ntombizodwa was left back at the house, and she went to the neighbours for assistance. SAPS later found Mdluli’s vehicle with Ntinga’s body not far away from it.

"Mdluli was found alive on the side of the road. He had suffered head injuries and was taken to a Durban hospital where he eventually succumbed to his wounds a few days later. Mpanza and Ntombizodwa were subsequently arrested.

The state, represented by Adv. Pretty-Girl Thobile Ntsele led evidence of cellphone downloads from the digital forensic investigation, as well as the testimonies of Section 204 witnesses.

"The vehicle tracker evidence and testimonies of the various SAPS officials who dealt with the matter also bolstered the state’s case.

"In addition, Adv. Ntsele handed in Victim Impact Statements facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Sthe Cebekhulu and compiled by family members of the deceased.

"In her statement, Ntinga’s mother said that she was suffering and in disbelief that the woman who lived with her son had orchestrated his d3ath.

"Ntombizodwa was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment for each m8rder (2 x life imprisonment), 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and five years imprisonment for each kidnapping. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in the effective sentence of life imprisonment.

"Mpanza was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for each murder, 14 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and four years imprisonment for each kidnapping. He will serve 25 years imprisonment, effectively.

"They were both declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“The NPA welcomes the successful prosecution of this matter. Together with our partners in the justice cluster, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of justice on behalf of the victims of crime.”

Former Rivers Head of Service, George Nwaeke, speaks again, denied being kidnapped (video)

Dr. George Nwaeke, the former Rivers State Head of Service, has denied the claims that he was kidnapped and forced to make statements against the suspended state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a video released on Saturday morning, Nwaeke refuted allegations made by his wife, Florence, who had raised the alarm over his whereabouts following his resignation earlier in the week. Contrary to his wife's claim, Nwaeke stated that he voluntarily travelled to Abuja to report himself to security agencies regarding recent political developments in Rivers State.

“I am in TRANSCORP Abuja. I arrived this morning from Port Harcourt to meet security agencies and report myself, as well as the troubling events happening in Rivers State. I resigned as Head of Service on Monday because of these developments,” he said.

He also dismissed his wife’s fears, attributing them to misinformation.

“I just saw a video of my wife trending. She was told I had been kidnapped and given a script to read. I want to make it clear—I am not kidnapped. I am in Abuja, working.

When I was Head of Service, my wife was not involved in my official duties. That script she read is null and void. I am safe and sound. I will report myself to the appropriate security agencies because Abuja houses their headquarters, and I feel safer making my report here.”

His distraught wife, Florence Nwaeke, last night expressed deep concern over her husband’s safety. She revealed that while he had called to confirm his arrival in Abuja, she became suspicious after watching an online interview with him.

“I said, ‘That is not my husband. That is not my husband,” she recalled.

She described her frantic attempts to reach him, stating

“I sent him a message: ‘Are you under duress? Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not responding?’ But he didn’t reply. His numbers are not going through. Nigerians, help me!”

Mrs. Florence George Nwaeke, the wife of the former Head of Rivers State Civil Service, has alleged that her husband was forced to organize a press statement where he made damning allegations against the suspended governor of Rivers state, Siminalayi Fubara.

Nweke who resigned last week, alleged that the suspended governor ordered the bombing of the state House of Assembly complex in 2023 and had plans to unseat President Tinubu.

In an interview with Channels TV, the wife who could not contain her tears, said that she had not been able to reach her husband since he left Rivers for Abuja.

According to her,

“When he got to Abuja, he called that he had landed. I said, ‘Thank God’. The next thing I saw this night (Friday night): people were calling me and said he got an interview. I said, ‘What interview? Interview for what?’ Not until I saw things flying on the internet that he granted an interview. What happened? I said, ‘That is not my husband. That is not my husband.’

So I sent him a message. I said, ‘Are you under duress?’ I sent him a message. I said, ‘Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not talking to me?’.

Oh, Jesus, help me. Nigerians, help me. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. Look at the message I sent to him. See the message I sent to him.

Governor, help me. My husband is in trouble,” she said. “He is in trouble,” she said, claiming the husband resigned under duress.

Florence said her husband resigned because of the pressure some persons were mounting on him to sign documents that will implicate Fubara.

“So, he said he would resign. Instead of this wahala (problems) let him leave them. He now wrote his resignation (letter).”

Former Head of Service in Rivers state, George Nweke, makes wild allegations against his former boss

The recently resigned Rivers State Head of Service Dr George Nweke, has alleged that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, sponsored the burning of the  recent explosions that occurred on some oil facilities in the state and masterminded the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex to stop his impeachment by the house.

Nweke said this in a press briefing he had in Abuja days after his removal from office by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibom Ete Ibas.

Speaking to newsmen, Nweke who appreciated Fubara for appointing him to serve in his administration, said his aim of addressing the press was to put records straight, adding that only falsehoods are peddled on social media platforms.

“With loads of misinformation on print and electronic media, I have chosen to put the record straight, I was not sacked neither was I pressured to resign, I did it willingly from the depth of my heart, however as an insider and a key player in this administration by my position, who worked closely with Siminilayi Fubara, it will be unfair for me to keep silent or not to address some key factors that has affected or will affect our state if we continue on this trajectory.

“I want to use this medium to thank Mr. President for a swift intervention in the Rivers State crisis especially on the state of emergency that was declared and assented to by the National Assembly.

“You will recall that when the governor was suspended, as the head of service I was the next in command so I am not speaking from outside, I am speaking as an insider. If not for the intervention of Mr. President Nigeria would have faced the worst economic sabotage and Rivers State would have been up in flames.”

Nweke alleged that Fubara had on the wake of the crisis in the state directly his suspended Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, to burn down the Assembly complex to avert his seeming impeachment.

He also said the suspended governor had made some advancement to bring down the residential quarters of the state lawmakers, adding that Fubara wasted state funds to massage his ego.

Nweke said:

“First, it all started with the Rivers State House of Assembly were the Governor, Siminilayi Fubara directed his Chief of Staff (Edison Ehie) to burn down the assembly in a way to avert his impeachment, that evening Edison was in government house with two other boys, including the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA one Chijioke. I was there with them when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for that operation, though I do not know the amount inside.

I want to tell Rivers people today that the house of assembly complex in Moscow Road was clearly brought down by Edison Ehie under the instructions of Gov Siminilayi Fubara, I challenge him to an open confrontation and I will throw more light on it. A day after that incident, I almost resigned but I was very scared because I know the power of a sitting governor and he knew that I am aware of the whole plan and that I am discomforted with the unconscionable act and deliberate posture of innocence and mien of a sheep.

Another attempt was also made to destroy the residential quarters of the House of Assembly members if not for the press conference that was made there by Rivers youths, Rivers elders and National Assembly members, that would have been another barbaric demolition in Rivers State.

I came to realize that they wanted to demolish that second building because, after some weeks, he told me that if he had known early he would have gone to pull down their hall before visiting the residential quarters of the assembly and that he didn’t know that they had such a beautiful hall were they are using now for their sitting, I was shocked and I asked myself how could a man that wants to lead his people be destroying his state assets and wasting public funds on a needless ego fight.”

The former HoS urged leaders of the Niger Delta region to support the Emergency Rule declared in the state, while claiming that Fubara and some other Ijaw leaders sponsored the bombing of some oil facilities in the state.

“Thirdly I want to advice some key stakeholders who has condemned the state of emergency made by the President and confirmed by the National Assembly to retract their statements, I also understand that they are only seeing the surface. If the President did not take proactive step, no one knows who would have been affected by the sinister plans that were cooking.

While I thank Mr President for the state of emergency that was declared in Rivers State for 6 months, I will plead with him not to give up on Rivers State affairs because a lot is going on there with Governor Fubara. One of the factors that got me removed was when Governor Fubara told me that they will use the Ijaws to decide who would become the next president of Nigeria and I asked him how that work. Is it by votes or by what means?

He clearly told me that he is the chief security officer of Rivers State and his brother is in charge of Bayelsa State and all the pipelines are under their care that at the appropriate time, they will tell the boys what to do and fund was not an issue. That was why when he made that statement in his public function that “I will tell the boys what to do at the appropriate time” I knew something was up and perhaps the time was near.

He boasted to be the “David that will bring down the Goliath of Rivers State.” That he has the backing of the cream-de-la cream in the state. The likes of Dr. Peter Odili and their family promised to use their contacts in the judiciary including some members of their University Council to break new ground for him.

The plan was to start from non-Ijaw speaking areas to destroy oil facilities to remove attention from the Ijaw and make it have a statewide look. The Ogoni, Oyibo, and Ahoda areas were to be bombed first before the Ijaw zones. This would have brought down the government of President Tinubu and ushered in a new President from the coalition of political parties with a Vice President from the Ijaws.

Sometime, I sleep over in the government house but I started being uncomfortable when Gov. Bala Mohammed and some other stakeholders started nocturnal visits to Rivers State. I recalled after one of such visits he told me that he would support Bala Mohammed for president or any other northerner. That discussion is ongoing. Though I was not bothered about who he supported I was more concerned about the quantum of state resources that he released to these visitors at each visit.

Let me also draw the attention of the Nigeria Labour Congress to call the Chairman of their Rivers State chapter to order to avoid politicizing Labour. I am privy to several private meetings between the Governor and the Labour leader in the state and the largesse that accompanied each meeting to compromise the Labour Union.

More worrisome is several meetings between the governor, his chief of staff and some militant leaders. The details of which meetings I am not privy to since I was not allowed into the meetings. However, each meeting ended with a huge sum of money paid to attendees.

I wish to state categorically that Rivers people and indeed Nigerians are the beneficiary of the declaration of a state of emergency rule in Rivers State and not Gov. Fubara or Minister Wike.''

The Senate opposes renaming INEC's headquarters after Nwosu.

A motion to rename the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in honor of the late Professor Humphrey Nwos, the former chairman of the now-defunct NEC, was met with opposition from the Nigerian Senate.

The NEC, the electoral body that oversaw the canceled June 12, 1993, presidential election that Chief Moshood Abiola won, was chaired by the late Nwosu.

The motion to name the INEC edifice after Prof Nwosu was re-sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Thursday after lawmakers threw it out on Wednesday.

Abaribe had called for posthumous national honours to be conferred on Nwosu in recognition of his role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

Local events and activities

However, the proposal sparked a heated debate once again, with lawmakers deeply divided over Nwosu’s legacy.

Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Osita Ngwu acknowledged that Nwosu operated under a military regime, which restricted his ability to announce the results of the annulled election.

He argued that

“There was no way he would have announced the results with a gun to his head. That doesn’t change the fact that some of us see him as a hero.”

Speaking in the same line, Senator representing Abia Central, Austin Akobundu, described as most uncharitable, the dismissal by lawmakers of Nwosu’s contributions, insisting that he deserved a place in Nigeria’s hall of honour.

Local events and activities

On the other hand, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South), dismissed the idea, questioning the rationale behind the Senate to honour someone who failed to announce the results of the June 12 election, insisting that “nothing should be named after him”.

For his part, Senator Cyril Fasuyi (Ekiti North), argued that history does not reward efforts, but only results.

“As long as he did not announce the result, whether under duress or not, I am against naming INEC headquarters after him,” he submitted

Also, Senator Sunday Karimi representing Kogi West criticised Nwosu for lacking the courage to speak out, while Senator Afolabi Salisu (Ogun Central), warned that immortalising Nwosu would undermine the memory of late MKO Abiola, the widely accepted winner of the annulled election

“Any attempt to do anything beyond a one-minute silence is to rubbish Abiola’s legacy,” he declared.

After intense deliberation, most senators rejected the motion through a voice vote.

They, however, agreed to honour him with a one-minute silence and extend condolences to his family, effectively dismissing the other prayers to immortalize the late NEC chairman.
