An NYSC Corper receives threats for criticizing Tinubu’s govt

A youth corper in Nigeria has come under fire after speaking out about her frustration with the government over the rising cost of living and economic struggles in the country

In an emotional video, she criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, questioning its response to the ongoing inflation and economic downturn.

“I genuinely feel so overwhelmed,” she said. “If a lot of Nigerians come out and start speaking on what we are actually going through, then maybe changes will be made in the government, don’t you guys think?”

The corper expressed frustration over skyrocketing prices of basic goods and services, including food, transportation, and rent. She recalled visiting a supermarket, where she was shocked to find that a crate of eggs now costs N6,500, a significant jump from previous years.

“It’s just like every single week, prices increase. I want to know what the government is doing about this increment,” she lamented. “Why am I going to get a crate of eggs, and they are telling me it is N6,500? I literally can’t remember when eggs used to cost N800.”

She also decried the rising cost of electricity bills and transportation, saying, “Uber is about N25,000 to go to a certain location with friends. We can’t even take Uber. Why are things so expensive?”

Beyond inflation, she highlighted issues such as poor living conditions, high data costs, and the struggles of young Nigerians trying to start businesses. She described the NYSC program as unbeneficial, stating that the allowance given to corps members does not cover basic expenses.

“Being an NYSC corper, there’s nothing beneficial about this whole NYSC thing. The money I spend on transportation is just more than the alawi the government gives me. I can’t keep up,” she added.

Shortly after posting the video, the corper revealed that she received threatening phone calls from NYSC officials. According to her, the calls started with the NYSC secretariat before escalating to the Local Government Inspector (LGI).

“So guys, yesterday I made a video talking about the Nigerian government and how terrible President Tinubu is, and I was crying in the video,” she said in an update. “Thirty

minutes ago, I just received a call from the NYSC board.”

She claimed that the official yelled at her, demanding she take down the video. “Hey, pull down that rubbish you put there,” the official reportedly said.

Expressing fear over the situation, the corper noted that NYSC officials had access to her personal details, including her home address. “Every NYSC corper has to fill a file with their phone number and address. I’m like, these people actually have my house address and know where I’m staying. And now they have started calling me first to threaten me,” she said.

She defended her right to criticize the government, insisting she was not insulting President Tinubu but merely demanding accountability. “I wasn’t insulting the president, ma. I was only asking for accountability. I said he is a terrible president. That is not an insult; it is a statement,” she argued.

The corper voiced concerns over her safety, stating that she was being repeatedly called and intimidated for simply speaking out. “Now I’m putting it out here so you guys will see and know. NYSC has my house address, and they are calling me to threaten me. So in case anything happens, you will be very much aware where the problem started,” she warned.

Instead of addressing her concerns, she said, the NYSC officials resorted to threats. “I should have said the Nigerian government is not doing anything about the inflation that is happening, and it’s causing us to be very depressed,” she stated. “And instead of me getting a call saying, ‘Oh, we are working on it,’ I’m getting a call saying, ‘Oh, you’re very stupid. Why did you do that to Tinubu? Take down that video.’”
