President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday travelled to Daura for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. He travelled after attending the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, the first time in over three months.
The President who returned to the country penultimate Saturday had cancelled the weekly meeting last Wednesday which would have been his first appearance after 104 days in London, United Kingdom on medical grounds.
Two ministers, Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said the opening prayers.
They expressed appreciation to God for bringing the President back to the country safely. They also prayed for the nation and Nigerians.
Before the meeting went into a closed session, the President announced cash gifts of N1m and N500,000 each for members and officials of the national female basketball team, D’Tigress, who won the 2017 FIBA Women’s Afro Basket tournament in Mali and qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain.
Buhari left Abuja for his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State shortly after the meeting to observe the Eid-el Kabir holiday.
The Federal Government had earlier declared Friday and Monday as public holidays.
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State led top government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mustapha Inuwa, to receive President Buhari at the Musa Yar’Adua International Airport. The Emir of Katsina, Dr Kabir Abdulmumin, was also at the Airport to welcome President Buhari.
The Presidential jet touched down at the tarmac at 4.06pm.
After airport ceremonies, Buhari was taken in an helicopter to Daura where he is expected to spend the Eid-El-Kabir holiday.
Buhari’s trip to his hometown is an indication that the traditional sallah homage that Muslims residing in Abuja pay on sitting Presidents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja will not hold on Friday.
